Film 129 in the "1001 Films to See Before You Die" challenge is 1945's "The Battle of San Pietro". This short war documentary looks at the Battle of San Pietro Infine sixty miles from Naples during World War II. Quite honestly, I watched and I can't tell whether I like it or not. It's one of those films that I'm not gonna remember easily if anyone brings it up in conversation. The narrator, which was director John Huston, made me really sleepy and disinterested in the film as it went on. He also made it sound like the war in San Pietro was about German's not wanting the town's people to grow their crops of grapes. Even when I checked my emails for a second, I had no idea what was going on! Overall, if you're the type of person who's interested in this type of stuff then this is for you. For everyone else... not so much. To me... it's a "meh" rating. Fun fact of the film - director John Huston was a captain in the army when the movie was being filmed; he was later promoted to major. If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. Here is what I had to say while watching 1945's "The Battle of San Pietro"
Film - The Battle of San Pietro
Year - 1945
Director - John Huston
Written by - John Juston
Staring - Mark W. Clark, John Huston
IMDb Rating - 7.1/10
My Rating - MEH
Length - 32 min
Genre - Documentary, Short, War
We open with a man telling us about what happened in San Pietro
Why is he talking out of the side of his mouth?
He dedicates the film to those who lost their lives in battle
OPENING CREDITS
We're 60 miles from Naples
The way this narrator is talking makes it sound like they had a war with grapes
From late October 1943 to December 1943, they battled
Those are some muddy roads
FIRE THE CANNON!!
I'm slightly confused as to what he's talking about
One minute he was talking about grapes and now he's talking about dead Italians
So... is he saying that Nazis have San Pietro taken along with the surrounding mountain area
December 8th at 6:20am, the British made their move
ATTACK!!!!!
All I can see are flashing lights
Shots of dead soldiers
EXPLOSION!
The first battalion was more successful than the others in their attack
Stop calling the mountain by numbers
"1205 and 950" - WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!!!!!!
More shots of dead soldiers
Can't see a thing due to the smoke
Losing interest with the film
Enemy planes are ruining our plans
All I heard was the words "High Road" and I started singing Mastodon's song of the same name
FIRE THE TANKS!!!!
Syncronize watches
December 15th - D-Day
This narrator is making me sleepy
That tank just did a drift
And two tanks have been destroyed and five were imobilised
I check my email for one minute and I have no idea what's happening
"Counter attacks came in waves"
Fancy a nice stroll while everyone else is at war?
That's the end of the battle
We need 1100 new soldiers!
That one soldier looked like John Travolta
So... All the people living in San Pietro hid in caves to avoid the enemy
Let's just pretend like nothing ever happened
SHE'S CARRYING A COFFIN ON HER HEAD!!!!!
Don't mind us breastfeeding our babies
Time for random shots of children wandering the streets
Random shot of cows plowing fields
Why were we shown the Liberty Bell?
