Film 124 in the "1001 Films to See Before You Die" is 1936's "My Man Godfrey". This film is written by Morrie Ryskind and is based on a short novel by Eric Hatch entitled "1101 Park Avenue". And to make a long review short, this film was absolutely shit! I lost interest within 5 minutes, the picture quality is so dark that trying to brighten the TV screen made it worse, the sound quality was so bad it gave me a headache. But the worst of all, this film has clearly shown it's age. It's dull, it's stupid on all sorts of levels. All I got out of the film was that rich people like to go on scavenger hunts and make money by, I'm assuming, stealing random things such as animals, ornaments and homeless people. Or as they're called in this film "Forgotten". Complete waste of time attempting to watching. And now I'm mad! I switched off after 17 minutes!!! 17! That's how bad this film was. That's 17 minutes of my life that I am never getting back. My only hope is that whatever I pick for film 125 better be a masterpiece! Before I lose the will to live there is one fun fact about the film. That fact is that William Powell and Carole Lombard were a married couple for two years but the two had been divorced for three years prior to filming. If you have seen this film, or the 1957 remake (which I'm assuming is better), then let me know what you thought of them in the comments. Here is what I had to say while attempting to watch 1936's "My Man Godfrey"
Film - My Man Godfrey
Year - 1936
Director - Gregory La Cava
Written by - Eric Hatch, Morrie Ryskind, Gregory La Cava
Staring - William Powell, Carole Lombard, Alice Brady
IMDb Rating - 8.1/10
My Rating - UTTER FUCKING SHITE
Length - 92 min (1h 32min)
Genre - Romance, Comedy
Feels like the start of a musical with this music playing over the credits
We open at a rubbish site built next to what looks like a homeless shelter
I can't see a thing!
Would you like to make $5? All you have to do is act like my husband
He's dressed to fancy for a homeless man
I really can't see a thing
The rich people are on a scavenger hunt to look for a man - Not the type of scavenger hunt I saw on Viva La Bam
Lets have a chat about coughing
At a place that's very busy and full of people dressed fancy
LOOK AT MY GOAT!!!! I can make a simulation game out of it
I'm not even 10 minutes in and this film is showing it's age!
I can't focus on any of this
Where did the cat come from?
This film has given me a headache
All she needs is a "Forgotten man" and goldfish to win the hunt
We must check that you're homeless by stroking your beard
I like how some of the crowd is saying "cheat" at her
She wants to help Godfrey for winning
She gives him a job as her butler
You can tell I'm homeless because my coat has holes in the pockets
Godfrey arrives as the new butler and has new clothes and has also had a shave
I really have lost interest
ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
